May 2024.
These pieces were created during a year when I uttered “I’m losing my mind” more times than you’d imagine. (My therapist would reply, “Maybe you aren’t losing your mind, maybe you’re losing the conditioning…”) A period of deep questioning, incessantly digging into who I am and who I am becoming, exploring the boundaries of my labels and the edges of my body. I became obsessed with the parts that define us as women, that have defined us, that others use to define us. I looked around at the women in my life, the roles they played, the boxes they squeezed themselves into, the labels they were saddled with. I looked at the stories I told about myself, about my life and the direction it was to take. I looked at what it means to be a woman, to be in my womanhood… An intense woman, an aging woman, a passionate woman, a childless woman, a divorced woman, a hysterical woman, a woman without secrets, a woman writhing with life.
Throughout the year, I would oscillate (sometimes weekly) between fearlessly tumbling down the rabbit hole of time, lounging in my nudity, unbothered by the scrutiny of my critical gaze and scared shitless for what’s to come, who I am to become when I let go of the parts that once were and surrender to the creature that’s taking hold.
I fell to pieces several times throughout the process. As I fell, I would gather up the pieces through my drawings. As I drew, I made sense of the parts, reconfiguring them, shapeshifting and morphing them into the version of me that was calling me forward. Over and over, a reliable ritual, I’d fall to pieces and gather up the parts, fall to pieces and gather up the parts. Each part, a piece of the whole.
This is a collection of artwork that I hope inspires you to lovingly look into the person you see in the mirror, to witness them in their truth, to recognize them as so much more than the individual parts, to recognize them as someone you don’t fully understand, as someone you have so much more to discover about.
